Post: Asbestos Siding Removal

Hi @David Nacco If it is in decent shape I would suggest putting the vinyl siding over the asbestos. I would be sure to use a vapor barrier when installing the vinyl over the asbestos, so it is more contained. There are some step by step resources that go through putting vinyl on asbestos siding, I wouldn't recommend doing it your self, but you can atleast get some ideas on what to ask for or look for.

Hi @Dhaval Sheth  I paid my contractor 50% of material costs upfront, after the second time I used him I paid all of the materials upfront so it made the process a little quicker. I would be sure to keep track of all the receipts and make sure everything is adding up correctly.

@Bryan Montross This is pretty good for it being your first time using Homestyler. I actually had a semi-similar layout I occupied as a tenant a long time ago. I would recommend removing the peninsula and add a table. I don't see someone using the upstairs as a living room, and would anticipate the finished basement acting as their primary living room. For refrigerator, it looks pretty limited on options. Is there enough space to put it next to the pantry? That would be where I would put it based on this layout.

Hi @Nicholas Ferraiuolo. I would check your local resources like Houston REIA, Texas Apartment Association, or Houston Apartment Association, they may be able to point you in the right direction. Otherwise there is always meetup (see below).

For me I think it is really 4 main areas.

1. Finished Basement

2. Updated Floors (LVT Or LVP)

3. Wash/Dryer Units

4. Stainless Steel Appliances

Hi @Bobby English as a couple others have mentioned, I think overall the preference is gas over electric. However I don't think it is nearly as important as other areas for people. What is there currently? I would recommend providing an upgraded version of whatever type was there previously.

Hi @Anthony Therrien-Bernard  I think having a 2nd washer/dryer unit is a good idea if they are separated. I would definitely not put the washer/dryer units in the bedroom closet though. I think you could get away with a setup in the living room to the left of the electric fireplace, without it looking too weird. I would rather have it look a little unorthodox and in a shared space, than in the bedroom.

Hi @Alan Feldman I would start by removing the carpets, then proceed to cleaning everything (walls, floors, windows, etc.). You will need to use a powerful cleaning agent or as Bridgette mentioned, a vinegar solution. I have used a vinegar solution on flooring and toilets in the past and it has worked really well. After you do a deep clean on everything, I would get to priming and painting.

I would definitely have someone come in and clean all the ducts, change filters, and inspect everything including your chimney.
