I too have been down this road with D&B... My experience was also pretty frustrating since everything they suggest leads to the sale of some service they offer that is the be all end all of business credit... I eventually waited the 30 days got my duns number and all has been well since... All the other crap they offer is a total waste!
I unfortunately didnt find a way around their crap but I've heard others state that they told the representatives that they need the duns number asap so that they could complete an application for a bid on a government project. This supposedly is the only reason that they will release the duns number for free instantly.
