For Houston look up the properties on hcad.org real property search by property address
You will get the owner's name and mailing address as well as quite a few details about the property (including ownership history).

A good place to start for gauging a city is BestPlaces.net
It may not have the most recent data but it helps scope an area and easily compares to cities along with the national average.
You can even download the data in spreadsheet format (notice "download.xls" at the right of the top "Housing" category).
