I recommend watching on YouTube channels such as Sanborn , this old house and Mike Holmes to develop an eye for problems that need addressing then hang out at a Home Depot and understand what typical repairs cost

Look for who the large contractors sub their work out to as your next step. It will likely be much cheaper. Also visit job sites and talk to them in context of the work they are doing
