I dont think the brown roof would ruin it for the gray at all, gray is still a good option.
Another good choice might be a dark blue....try looking for 'blue house brown roof' on pinterest, I love the look!

As others have said VA loan IS an option even if you arent active anymore.
Two things - one you should speak to a mortgage BROKER, they will shop lenders for you and come up with some good options. (I know a good one if you'd like his contact info).
two - VA doesnt just volunteer the helpful info you need, as youve already seen. really dig through google. I am in Texas and my mom is a vet...she had to dig to find out that there are foreclosures that are offered to VA loan recipients before available to the public and I am sure there is much more that she doesnt know. I am sure there is something similar that applies to you and the state you both enlisted in and are moving to.
